Supercritical CO2by Robbie Wright, Head of Production, The Grove

When it comes to concentrates, there are a lot of different options out there! We know this… you know this. With all those options, it can be difficult to identify those that give you the safest and purest product. You can rest assured that we did the homework for you when we chose supercritical CO2 as our extraction method.

What exactly is supercritical CO2, you ask?

It’s actually pretty simple when you take away the technical science part. We take CO2 (carbon dioxide) as a gas, and we pressurize it to the “Supercritical” state. We are pressurizing the CO2 so it turns into a liquid. In a liquid state, the CO2 acts as a solvent and passes through the product, capturing the coveted oils, waxes and other beneficial materials of the plant. Our methods preserve more of the terpenes, terpenoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids that contribute to the “entourage effect” and ensure a cleaner more effective end product.

Why super critical CO2?

Quite simply, supercritical CO2 extraction allows us to offer the safest and purest product to our patients. The lower operating temperature of supercritical CO2 extraction helps preserve terpenes and flavonoids that contribute to a better tasting and more effective end product. Unlike other methods, butane and other harmful solvents aren’t used in supercritical CO2, ensuring the cleanest and safest medicine we can produce.

None of this matters if the plants being used aren’t clean and pure too. Concentrates earned their name for a reason – they are highly concentrated versions of flower. That also means plants that accumulated undesirable elements during their life (through poor growing methods, chemical fertilizers, harmful pesticides and insecticides, etc.) may have those same elements present in a higher concentration. Not good!

To ensure that you get the cleanest and purest medicine possible, The Grove adheres to the strictest, state-of-the-art, eco-friendly growing techniques that mimic the growth conditions found in nature. We use all-natural, living soil and purely natural means of preventing pests and fungus. That means the concentrates we produce are among the safest and purest you can find.
