Do you know how to safely dose when enjoying cannabis? Chances are you know the perfect amount when you’re indulging in your favorite cannabis product, but if you’re trying something new or you’re new to cannabis it would be a good idea to check. No matter how familiar you are with cannabis, it’s always important to consume safely and responsibly. Here are some tips on safe dosing:

When you’re new to cannabis:

Tolerance:

It’s crucial to be aware of your tolerance. If you’re new to cannabis, or haven’t consumed in a long period of time, start small.  “Smoking and vaporizing have an almost immediate effect that intensifies relatively quickly (usually within 10-15 minutes), so wait at least 20-30 minutes before using more so you can get an idea of how it is affecting you,” recommends Consume Responsibly.

If you’re an avid consumer you probably know exactly how much of your favorite products to consume. Beware when trying something new as the potency can be different.

It doesn’t hurt to ask your budtender about the product’s potency and what effects to expect before taking your cannabis home.

Consumption methods:

Know the difference between consumption methods, especially when it comes to inhaling and ingesting. According to Consume Responsibly, ingesting can give you a stronger, longer-lasting effect, but it can take up to two hours to take effect. On the other hand, inhaling can provide immediate effects, peaking within 10-15 minutes. Here are some additional tips:

• Edibles. While they’re very popular, they are the most likely to result in over-consumption.Today, edibles are packaged with dosing information with one standard dose considered to be 10 mg. Leafly suggests newbies or low-tolerance consumers start with half of that dose.  When it comes to edibles, always start low, and go slow.
• Flower. The potency and effect of each strain is different. Smoking can give you an almost immediate effect, so start slow.
• Concentrates. Concentrates are very potent forms of cannabis that can be smoked or vaporized, and oil forms can be found in vape pens. No matter your experience with cannabis, Consume Responsibly recommends to go slow, and wait 20-30 minutes before your next dose of concentrates.
